[Archive]: Green Day’s Upcoming Album Trilogy, ¡Uno!, ¡Dos!, ¡Tre! – Album Covers Revealed

Doesn’t it seem like forever since we’ve had any new music from Green Day? Well, while it hasn’t quite been forever, it has been 3 long years since their last album, 21st Century Breakdown hit the shops. So, are you badly in need of a Billie Joe fix? I know I am! (And am also in total shock that he’s forty-years-old, since February! FORTY!!!)

Well, you’ve come to the right place, for here at Studenty we’ve got some just-in exclusive images for you, from the band’s upcoming trio of albums — ¡Uno!, which is due to be released on September 24 in the UK; ¡Dos!, which comes out on November 12 in the United Kingdom; and ¡Tre!, which will be released on January 14 2013 in the UK. While the album cover artwork for the first two releases from the upcoming trio of albums has already been released this month, the cover of part three is just in! Also — hello! –- who doesn’t need an excuse to see a pretty picture of Billie Joe, Mike and Tré happily holding up their latest pieces of musical magic?! Not me!

The album trilogy features lead vocalist and guitarist Billie Joe on the cover of part one — ¡Uno!; bassist, backing vocalist Mike Dirnt taking centre stage on the second, ¡Dos!; and, in a seriously subtle nod to his namesake, drummer Tré Cool on the cover of the final album in the set, ¡Tre!

Green Day with the complete trio of albums, ¡Uno!, ¡Dos! and ¡Tre!

The album trilogy will officially serve as their 9th album, not 9th, 10th and 11th albums, with Billie Joe’s response to the conundrum, which has surely crossed your Studenty mind being:

“One. Believe me, we asked.”

The trio of releases, which the band commenced recording on Valentine’s Day, will have their first single, Oh Love, cut from the first offering of the trilogy, ¡Uno! The single, according to Greenday.com, will “hit the airwaves” on July 16. And while the California-based band have yet to announce any Irish tour dates in 2012, they are playing some shows this year pre-album release — in Japan, France, Germany, Italy and America. Their itinerary, if you’re feeling especially flush, is as follows:

18 August 2012: Summer Sonic, Tokyo, Japan

19 August 2012: Summer Sonic, Osaka, Japan

26 August 2012: Rock en Seine, Paris, France

29 August 2012: Hockey Park, Munchengladbach, Germany

30 August 2012: Wuhlheide, Berlin, Germany

1 September 2012: Rock am See, Konstanz, Germany

2 September 2012: I-Day Festival,Bologna, Italy

10 September 2012:  Voodoo Music Experience, New Orleans, LA

Hopefully they’ll pay a visit to our fair isle during the all-but-obligatory (unless you’re Kate Bush, obvs.) tour to support the much anticipated record trilogy. Keep your ears peeled for an announcement which will most likely be made in early 2013. In the meantime, you can watch the trailers for part one and two of the album trio right here, on Studenty (below). And if you’re really hankering for a live (well, as near as you’re going to get to Green Day live this year, in Ireland anyway) Green Day fix on Irish soil, (read also: not flush enough to fly out to Japan!) you could always bag yourself a ticket to the Irish leg of their American Idiot musical, based on their mega-hit seminal album of the same name, which will be gracing us with its presence from November 5 – November 10, in Dublin’s Bord Gáis Energy Theatre.

While Green Day aren’t official cast members, they have been known to crop up from time to time, with Billie Joe attending a performance inCosta Mesa, California, as recently as 3 June. Green Day also made a surprise appearance, performing the show’s title track, along with old favourite Basket Case (from the days before American Idiot granted them a pack-fresh cachet of cool for a new generation) a few days after the musical opened in Broadway, New York, in April 2010. Billie Joe also took on the lead role, playing St. Jimmy, in the production for a brief spell in September 2010; and for a longer stint in January 2011. So, cross your fingers, toes, and anything else remotely crossable, and you just might see the mighty Green Day in the gorgeous flesh on home soil in the year 2012.

In the meantime, let me know –- are you excited about the new album trilogy? Will you be queueing up, old school style, outside a record store come September, November and January? Or will you be downloading ¡Uno!, ¡Dos! and ¡Tre! onto your MP3 player? In the case of the latter, do you even give a crap-ola about the cover art?! Do you think the trio of releases is a good idea, or a bit rip off-ey? Could it possibly come to rival the ever-brilliant American Idiot? What are your thoughts on Green Day? Tell me all in the comments, or tweet me @aprilbarry101

You can see an official YouTube preview of ¡Uno! here and ¡Dos! here.

[Archive]: It’s Official: Johnny Depp has Split from Vanessa Paradis

Sad news just in from the world of showbiz — Johnny Depp has officially split from long term love Vanessa Paradis. The couple, who have been together for 14 years and who have two children together confirmed their separation today, June 19 2012, with Depp’s publicist saying,

“Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis have amicably separated. Please respect their privacy and, more importantly, the privacy of their children.”

The pair, who have never married had, up until the start of this year, been seen as one of Hollywood’s more solid couples. However, rumours of a split have been circling since January, with both Depp and Paradis said to have been leading increasingly separate lives. They also hadn’t made a joint red carpet appearance together in some time despite high profile film releases both this year and last year for Johnny –- Dark Shadows this year, and The Rum Diary in 2011. Vanessa has also been promoting her filmJe Me Suis Fait Tout Petit (I Was Made Very Small) recently. In January of this year Vanessa blasted these rumours when asked about them on French television show Grand Journal by saying,

“Yes it’s false! Of course it’s false!”

Johnny and Vanessa first met in 1998, in Paris, while Depp was filming The Ninth Gate, with Johnny saying of their first meeting,

“…I just knew, you know…”

Within just a few short months, French model-singer-actress Paradis and Depp had set up home together in France’s Côte d’Azur. They became first time parents the following year, on May 27, 1999, when they welcomed their first daughter, Lily-Rose Melody Depp into the world, in Paris. They also had a baby boy, John Christopher Depp III, who is better known as Jack, on 9 April 2002.

This relationship isn’t the first high profile one to fail for either Johnny or Vanessa -– Johnny was previously engaged to both actress Winona Ryder, and model Kate Moss. Vanessa was also said to be dating singer Lenny Kravitz in the ‘90s. Depp was also previously married to make-up artist Lori Anne Allison, from 1983 – 1985, before becoming a worldwide star.

[Archive]: Miley Cyrus is Getting Spliced. Thoughts? I Got ‘Em…

Miley Cyrus is engaged, y’all!

Yes indeed, the perpetually tween-seeming starlet (in actuality she’s due to celebrate her 20th birthday in November) is set to get spliced to fellow Hollywood star and longtime boyfriend Liam Hemsworth (former Neighbours actor, currently appearing in The Hunger Games; and brother to one Kit from Home and Away Chris Hemsworth, better known these days for his turn in Thor and The Avengers). The twosome have reportedly been stepping out on and off for three years , ever since meeting on the set of The Last Song in 2009.

They officially announced their intention to wed last Wednesday, June 6, with Ms. Cyrus waxing lyrical of her love, Liam,

“I’m so happy to be engaged and look forward to a life of happiness with Liam”

and later tweeting,

“I’m happy to share this news with you all. I feel like all my dreams are coming true.”

The Australian-born actor, 22, popped the question to the Nashville, Tennessee native almost a week earlier, on May 31, with a 3.5 carat diamond ring from jeweller Neil Lane.

So, thoughts. Yup, I got ‘em.  Specifically on the whole Miley-Cyrus-becoming-Mrs-Hemsworth thing. Who knew titles of articles could yield such clues to their content, eh?

Okay, just to preface –- I’m not going to hate on anyone for getting engaged. Unless it’s Vanessa Paradis, you dig, natch?! My view is, if you’re not hurting anyone, and something makes you happy, then go ahead and do it.

But, here’s my bugaboo –- Miley’s a mere 19 years old. Not actually eons younger, to my surprise, but, born in 1992, she’s all of 19 years. Ninteen! That, in my opinion, is waaay too young to be making plans to become a Mrs/donning a diamond which pre-empts marriage/familiarising yourself with wedding favours (unless you’re a wedding guest, in which case – hello! – free swag alert!). I know some people meet The One early on, and sometimes you just know, but at 19, the likelihood is that he-who-you’re-convinced-is-The-One is actually the-one-who-you’ll-make-quips-about-with-your-friends-on drunken-nights-out while painting the town years later, or laugh about how besotted and totally in lurve you thought you were when you actually do come across The all-important actual One.

Seriously, at 19 your frontal lobe, which is an area of your brain which deals with processes such as reasoning, planning, and judgment (fairly important, then, when it comes to choosing your forever-mate) is not even fully developed, and FYI, won’t be until between the ages of 25 and 30. Yep.

Putting aside the fact that Miss Miley started her professional career as an actress in Disney Channel vehicle Hannah Montana at the young age of 11, let me put this in real world terms. At the age of 19, saying, simply for the sake of argument, that you completed the much-dreaded torture fest that is the Leaving Cert at the age of 18, you’ve been out of secondary school for one year. You’ve either :

a)      Taken a year out to travel, to work, perhaps to investigate the whys and wherefores of crop circles (hey, we don’t judge here at Studenty), possibly painted murals in some far-flung place, perhaps Belize; maybe even volunteered to do something, somewhere (to be specific).

b)      Been a college bum for a year, be it in CIT, UCC, or even the sun-drenched campus of UCLA. (They are your only options, obvs. This isn’t  Studenty Galway!) If you’re a UCC Arts student who is studying English you have yet to even encounter an English seminar.

c)       You’ve been a worker bee for a year. You intrinsically know how everyone in the office takes their coffee and tea, down even to the precise shade of mahogany their caffeine-in-a-cup must resemble (must!). You’re also highly adept at handling a photocopier.

Could you imagine lasooing that little amount of real life experience with an engagement ring, no matter how sparkly and shiny the stone? I certainly couldn’t.

When I was reading up on all things Miley, I just thought there was an interesting juxtaposition on the People.com website –- featuring amongst the list of the top five most read articles were, at number number, Miley’s engagement, and, at number two, Drew Barrymore’s wedding. Now Drew, much as I love her particular unique brand of crazy-quirky-cool, could teach Miss Miley a few life lessons.

Drew Barrymore — Miss Miley could learn a lot from Drew and her former flames

See, Drew hasn’t just become a blushing bride (if you’re asking — groom: Will Kopelman, occupation: art dealer; also, the bride appears to be sporting a baby bump, but has not officially confirmed this) for the very first time at the age of 37, oh no. See, our Drew was also engaged, and consequently betrothed at the tail end of her teen years too, at 19, to be precise, the self-same age as Miley is (engaged, not wed yet). She walked down the aisle with hubs number one, bar owner Jeremy Thomas, on March 20 1994, after dating for a mere six weeks. They were joined in holy matrimony by a minister-come-psychic-come-private-detective, who they found via a 24-hour wedding hotline. The venue? The Room, the groom’s bar in Los Angeles. Their wedded bliss was not to last though, as Drew filed for divorce less than two months later.

Ms. Barrymore also got hitched a second time, this time to Canadian comic Tom Green, in the year 2000. Having had a slightly longer courtship pre-engagement and ringing-of-wedding-bells –- they were engaged for about a year before they wed; the union only lasted for less than half a year -– five months, to be exact. The blushing bride was 26 (both as a bride and on becoming a divorcee the second time over). See, that frontal lobe is oh-so-important! Hopefully the third time will be the charm for dear Drew, the doyenne of rom-coms.

Miley, are you listening yet?!

Okay, so Miss Cyrus and Mr. Hemsworth have, in fairness, been going out for longer than Drew went out with her previous hubbies before they became husband and wife. As I said, on and off for three years, since the songstress-come-actress was 16, her Australian other half 19. It’s not the exact same situation, but still, it does add weight to my argument that 19 is still Way Too Young to wed.

Plus, if Drew’s story isn’t enough to sway you on the issue of an engagement at 19, how about all the other Hollywood starlets insisting on doing things So Damn Fast? I’m a bit perturbed by it all, to be honest.

Britney Spears, who got married at 22

Take Britney Spears, for example. She’s set to become a bride for the third time too, like Drew, at the age of 30, to Jason Trawick. Her first marriage, which lasted a grand total of 55 hours, was to childhood friend Jason Alexander at the tender age of 22. They wed in a quickie Las Vegas ceremony in 2004, the union later being annulled. Her second spin on the marriage merry-go-round was to Kevin Federline, a then-backup dancer. They got together reportedly while his girlfriend, actress Shar Jackson (you might know her from Moesha), was pregnant with his second child. Brit and Kev married in October 2004, making Britney both a bride for the second time in one year, and for a second time at the age of 22. The marriage, which produced two children -– Sean Preston, 11 months post wedding, and Jayden James, ONE YEAR later (what’s that I was telling you about frontal lobes, planning?!) lasted just shy of three years.

Christina Aguilera — also engaged and wed young

Also, fellow former New Mickey Mouse Club cast member Christina Aguilera married young too, to record producer Jordan Bratman –- becoming a bride in 2005 at the age of 24. She also became a Mom to son Max Liron Bratman at the age of 27; and had been a wife, become a Mom, and was also (are you sensing a theme yet?) a separated lady, all by the age of 29.

Jessica Simpson — the one time “Newlywed” was divorced from former hubs, Nick Lachey, in her twenties

Jessica Simpson is another pop star casualty of the celebrity Marrying Much Too Young club. She became engaged in 2002 at 21 to then 98 Degrees lead singer, and the pair tied the knot when Jess was but a tender 22 years old. In November 2005, Simpson and Lachey announced they were separating. By the time Jessica had turned 25, the separation had been finalised. She went on to file for divorce in December 2005. Lo and behold, Miss Simpson was a divorcee before she even blew 26 candles out on a birthday cake. She is currently engaged to Eric Johnson, and gave birth to his child, Maxwell Drew Johnson on May 1. Hopefully the second time ’round will be the trick for Jessica.

Ashlee Simpson, back when her tresses were of a red hue — another starlet who did it all a little too fast

Smaller sis’, Ashlee Simpson is yet another Hollywood starlet who’s carried on the trend of doing things So Damn Fast. The singer and actress became engaged to musician Pete Wentz at 22; married and two weeks later confirmed to be pregnant by the age of 23. Simpson became a mama at 23, giving birth to son Bronx Mowgli. The Mowgli part of their son’s name was apparently inspired by The Jungle Book. Predictably enough, their union hit the rocks 2 ½ years after the wedding, with Jess’ lil’ sis filing for divorce in February 2009, at 24 years old. She’s a divorcee by 25.

Suffice to say, hotfooting it to the engagement ring jeweller de jour, and marathon-ing it up the aisle in your teens or twenties does not seem to have panned out for these Hollywood stars. Take note, Miley.

And on that note, take a year out, go travelling, maybe consider studying crop circles, do whatever (again, to be specific!). Be a normal 19 year old. Have some fun, and be a teen. Save the serious talk of marriage until you’re at least 30. Your frontal lobe will thank you kindly.

Learn from your fellow stars’ mistakes. You’ve got years for all the rest!

[Archive]: Louis Walsh to Judge X Factor USA

Image

Louis Walsh, infamous Jedward manager and X Factor judge in the UK of eight years standing, is, in a shock move, set to become a part of X Factor USA’s judging panel. He will take up the hot seat alongside industry stalwarts Britney Spears, record executive LA Reid, and (relatively) new girl on the block, Demi Lovato.

The Mayo-born man is to temporarily replace head honcho Simon Cowell in the line-up for at least a weekend, due to Cowell suffering from a bout of bronchitis. Fresh from the Manchester X Factor auditions, Walsh has been flown via private jet to commence judging duties this weekend –- Friday June 8, and Saturday June 9, in Kansas City.

Surprising as Simon’s choice of fill-in judge may seem, this is not actually the first instance where Cowell has cherry-picked Walsh to act as his stand in. In 2010 he also covered for Simon during the Birmingham auditions for Britain’s Got Talent, and the Irishman was additionally drafted in to provide cover during the 2011 London leg of auditions when then-judge David Hasselhoff was unavailable.

Hopefully Cowell will be all recouperated by the time the next round of auditions take place, which are due to be held in San Francisco on June 16. If not, I’m sure Louis will be happy to keep his seat warm. Get well soon, Mr. C. And Louis, don’t be letting the side down. You owe us one for the whole Jedward debacle.

[Archive]: It’s Official: Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are Engaged!!! [All the Deets you Need to Know!]

Ladies and gents, be forewarned: it may just be time to purchase a far-too-fancy hat and dust off your best frock or shiny suit… and stalk your postman for your bound-to-need-signing-for invitation! For power couple extraordinaire Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have put (an engagement) ring on it. That’s right, the golden couple of the silver screen have confirmed that they are, seven years and six children later, engaged to be married.

Oh, and that loud cracking sound you hear? Why, it is in fact the (perhaps somewhat familiar) sound of the cumulative cracking of a million breaking hearts; a sound not so universally apparent since Johnny Depp, spiritual captain of our hearts and guyliner-wearer extraordinaire, decided to set up shop with one Ms. Paradis. Fear not though, lads and lassies (let’s face it, if you don’t fancy one of them, it is highly probable that you have a lusty yearning for the other, regardless of your sex), if we can cope with Mr. Depp going all domesticated daddy and devoted (common-law) hubby on us, we can surely weather this celebrity couple’s commitment to forever-coupling.

In a statement issued by Pitt’s manager, Cynthia Pett-Dante, we are told,

“Yes, it’s confirmed. It is a promise for the future and their kids are very happy. There’s no date set at this time. Brad designed the ring.”

This statement follows frenzied speculation on the interwebs after Angie was both spotted and photographed on Wednesday night at an L.A. museum with an ever-so-expensive and unmistakably luxe looking, hunk (to put it frankly) of rock adorning that finger. Cue said frenzy of speculation.

While confirmation of this major slice of breaking news in the business of show is hot off the presses, seasoned gossip watchers initially had their suspicions piqued when, earlier today, Beverly Hills jeweller, Robert Procop, was the first person to (unofficially) confirm the rumours, stating via a rep that,

“I can confirm that, yes, Robert Procop did indeed design an engagement ring for Angelina Jolie, designed in collaboration with Brad Pitt.”

While some may have been loathe to believe such claims, Procop is not simply a run of the mill diamonds and gold man — he’s got form. Not only is he the former CEO of uber posh Asprey and Gerrard; but he has also collaborated with Angelina Jolie on a jewellery collection entitled “The Style of Jolie“. The Oscar winning star has been spotted donning his jewels at a number of high profile red carpet events, while Procop was also the creative mind behind pieces of jewellery worn by Angelina during her stint as Elise Clifton-Ward in The Tourist.

According to the (veritable Pitt/Jolie in-house) jeweller, whose star is surely set to go stratospheric in light of Angelina’s most precious and prominent gift of jewellery to date, Brad “had a specific vision for this ring”, which was “realized over a year-long collaboration”, and “wanted every aspect of  it to be perfect”. All together now, aww!!!

Procop goes on to describe the diamond sparkler in dramatic detail, emphasizing the not-merely-made-to-measure, beautifully bespoke quality and design of the ring that the future Mrs. Pitt is bound to treasure for a lifetime. The jeweller stated that he “locate[d] a diamond of the finest quality and cut it to an exact custom size and shape to suit Angelina’s hand”, and that “the side diamonds are specially cut to encircle her finger. Each diamond is of the highest gem quality”. He also tells us that “Brad was always heavily involved, overseeing every aspect of the creative design evolution”. Lucky gal!

Of course, this won’t be the first trip down the aisle for either Jolie, 36, or Pitt, 48. Jolie, who was previously married to Brit actor Johnny Lee Miller from 1996 – 1999, famously sported the gothic married person’s equivalent of  teenage ‘Best Friends Forever’ matching necklaces in the form of matching vials of (their other half’s) blood dangling from their respective necks with second husband, Billy Bob Thornton. Pitt was, of course, married to Jennifer Aniston from 2000 – 2005, the actress best known as the star of everyone’s favourite all-but-guaranteed-to-cheer-you-up-no-matter-how-bad-the-hangover, will-forever-keep-her-in-designer-threads-on-the-back-of-the-residual-fees-alone, and forever favourite, Friends.

While the pair have yet to set a date for their impending nuptials, this marriage of bona fide Hollywood royalty may not be as far off on the horizon as it once appeared. In 2006, Brad, in a headlines-worldwide-making declaration, told Esquire magazine that he and Jolie would only wed when “everyone else in the country who wants to be married is legally able”. However, in a sort of about-turn, he made reference to that statement this year by saying,

“We made this declaration some time ago that we weren’t going to do it till everyone can. But I don’t think we’ll be able to hold out. It means so much to my kids, and they ask a lot. And it means something to me, too, to make that kind of commitment”.

However, he also backed up his previous statement by saying, in that breath, “But to be in love with someone and be raising a family with someone and want to make that commitment and not be able to is ludicrous, just ludicrous”

While we may be waiting a while before we are treated to the snaps of the future Mr. and Mrs. Pitt walking down the aisle – this proposal was only, what, seven years in the making (?!) — or, to be lucky enough (and having hassled your respective postie continuously to deliver your hallowed invite), to see the superstar spectacle in the flesh, in the meantime, you can ogle pics of the lovely Angelina and Brad, as man and wife (albeit in an acting capacity), and imagine what it would be like to married to the half of the pair who is the respective object of your lusty, crush-y ways, in their first joint film together, Mr. and Mrs. Smith.

Oh, and in case I forgot to mention it, congrats, Angelina and Brad. Meanwhile, I’ll be taking up residence next to my letter box, waiting patiently for my embossed, hallowed invite, and (kindly) harassing my (possibly not so much by the time this wedding rolls around) friendly local postman. Postie, you have been warned.

Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey Have Major Bust-up on American Idol Set

It’s daggers at dawn for Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey. The rumoured feud between the two singers, both judges on this year’s recently refreshed American Idol judging panel, alongside Keith Urban and Randy Jackson, has finally been verified, with a video being released Tuesday of the two chanteuses bickering and arguing loudly during auditions. In-fighting amongst the two had been denied as recently as four days ago, with Minaj previously saying that they were, “getting along wonderfully,”

In the video – which featured footage from Tuesday’s American Idol auditions which were held in North Carolina – released Tuesday by TMZ, Nicki lashes out at Mariah, saying,

“If you say one more disrespectful thing to me, I’ll [inaudible, but sounds like “kick”] your head,” “This is a joke,” “So every time you patronize me, I’m-ma take it back, and if you’ve got a fucking problem, handle it,”

and, reportedly,

“I’m not fucking putting up with her fucking highness over there,”

although, we think it sounds more like, “I’m not fucking quitting over their/your/her fucking highness over there,”

She also seems to say that Mariah insults her, “every five minutes,” and that she’s frequently “[running her] down,” also saying, per TMZ,

“I’m not gonna sit here every fucking minute to have you come down and harass me every minute everyday,”

Mariah reacts with,

“Why… why, oh why?!”

In between verbal blows, Keith and Randy attempt to act as peace brokers, both raising their hands and shouting, “Hey!” in an effort to assuage the two divas.

Taping was reportedly wrapped for the day after the bust-up, with host Ryan Seacrest later Tweeting,

“Going to bed in Charlotte after an anything but dull day at #idolauditions…”

Going on the contents of the video alone, with Nicki stating, “If you say one more disrespectful thing to me,” amongst other accusations, it does appear that Mariah must have insulted her in some way to prompt such a strong reaction, and seems far too heated to be about anything else.

Whose side are you on? What do you think prompted the argument? Let me know in the comments, or send a Tweet my way, @aprilbarry101

Reese Witherspoon Gives Birth to Third Child

Reese Witherspoon is a new Mom!

Reese Witherspoon is a new mom again. The Oscar winning actress, 36, has today, Thursday 27 September 2012, given birth for the third time to her and husband Jim Toth’s first baby together. They are now proud parents to a blue-swaddled bundle of joy; a boy who will be going by the name of Tennessee James. In a statement released today, Witherspoon’s rep confirms, “Reese Witherspoon and husband Jim Toth welcomed Tennessee James into their family today,” adding that, “Both mom and baby are healthy and the entire family is thrilled.”

Reese has two children from her former marriage to fellow actor Ryan Phillippe, Ava, 13; and Deacon, 8.

Witherspoon and entertainment agent Toth were first seen stepping out together in January 2010, with Jim popping the (marriage) question to Reese in December of that year, sealing their engagement. They were wed in March 2011, on the actress’s Ojai, California ranch.

Congratulations, and welcome to the world, little Tennessee!
