[Archive]: Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong Seeks Treatment for Substance Abuse

Green Day’s lead singer, Billie Joe Armstrong is, per a statement released by the band, “seeking treatment for substance abuse.”

This admission follows a controversial set by the band at Friday’s (September 21) iHeartRadio Music Festival, which took place at the MGM Grand, Las Vegas, Nevada.

During their appearance at the festival, Billie Joe appeared at times agitated and angry, ultimately culminating in him becoming enraged, and spouting a multiple expletive-filled rant, during which he said, amongst other things: “Fuck this shit,” “I’m gonna play a fucking new song,” and (even though it is not pleasant viewing, and is not the Green Day we know and love) my personal favourite: “I’m not fucking Justin Bieber,” on realising that there was only one minute left in the band’s set. He went on to then smash his guitar.

The frontman certainly didn’t seem like his usual jovial, happy-go-lucky self during the trio’s on-stage stint, during which his voice appeared at times strained, and where he genuinely did appear tired.

Green Day have since apologised, saying, “We…  apologize [sic] to those we offended at the iHeartRadio Festival in Las Vegas,” and “would like everyone to know that our set was not cut short…”, quelling rumours that Armstrong’s outburst was due to such a reason.

At least he’s not trotting out the old, overused, celebrity stalwart go-to excuse of ‘exhaustion and dehydration’.

His wife, Adrienne, has pledged her support for the singer, saying, “Sometimes we just need a moment to reset ourselves… Thanks for all the love & support”

This treatment follows Armstrong’s recent admittance to hospital on September 2, in Bologna, Italy, as a consequence of which the band was forced to cancel their scheduled concert in Bologna, saying, “We sincerely apologise to our fans, but unfortunately due to illness Billie Joe has been hospitalised, and we regretfully must cancel our performance,” adding; “We are beyond devastated… “ and that, “Billie is extremely upset about it.”

Billie Joe’s treatment comes during what is arguably the band’s most ambitious period to date, with the trio having recorded a series of three albums – ¡Uno!, ¡Dos!, and ¡Tre!, which are due to be released within the space of five months, between September 2012 and January 2013; touring during 2012, including a surprise show at Reading; and having announced ambitious tour plans for “a full UK tour” in 2013.

Tickets go on sale for a concert at London’s Emirates Stadium, with a capacity of 60, 000, on September 28 (Friday). Armstrong will also be appearing on the upcoming season of The Voice as a mentor to judge Christina Aguilera. The band also have two upcoming documentaries which are due to be released to accompany their new records; one about the making of same, the other to feature vintage footage of Green Day, shot before the release of their 1994 album, Dookie.

As well as these, they have recently collaborated with Rovio, the makers of Angry Birds, to put out a Green Day-themed update to Angry Birds Friends, the Facebook version of the popular game, which features new music from the band. As of now, though, the band says, “We regretfully must postpone some of our upcoming promotional appearances.”

Billie Joe was previously arrested for DUI in January 2003, and has admitted to using drugs in the past, saying recently that he had, previously, written under the influence of “methamphetamines.”

Hopefully this is just a blip in the road for Green Day’s main man, and Mr. Armstrong will be back to his best soon. Get well soon, Billie.

See the video here — even though this YouTube video claims that the band’s set was cut short, they have said in a statement, as detailed above, that it was not.

[Archive]: The White Stripes to Strum No More

Sad news coming out of the music world today, folks — Michigan born rock duo The White Stripes, consisting of once-married pair Jack and Meg White have, after, a long hiatus, split up. Officially confirming the news today, in a statement via their website, the pair have said:

“The White Stripes would like to announce that today, February 2nd, 2011, their band has officially ended and will make no further new recordings or perform live.”

They go on to emphasise that, “The reason is not due to artistic differences or lack of wanting to continue, nor any health issues as both Meg and Jack are feeling fine and in good health,” quelling fans’ possible fears that Meg’s well documented acute anxiety problems, which caused a halt to the band’s last tour in 2007, eventually leading to its cancellation, were in any way to blame for the unexpected split. Or inamicability, for that matter.

The pair cite, “…A myriad of reasons,” saying that is, “…mostly to preserve What [sic] is beautiful and special about the band and have it stay that way.” As well as this, they thank their fans for their un-relenting support during their both “intense and incredible career,” while also giving a future ray of hope to their legions of fans, by promising that their unreleased tracks will not become dust covered and forgotten, but will be released at some point in the future.

They end the statement by saying that they:

“…hope this decision isn’t met with sorrow by their fans but that it is seen as a positive move done out of respect for the art and music that the band has created. It is also done with the utmost respect to those fans who’ve shared in those creations, with their feelings considered greatly.”

And, by giving over ownership of all that is The White Stripes to said fans with these upbeat parting words:

“The White Stripes do not belong to Meg and Jack anymore. The White Stripes belong to you now and you can do with it whatever you want. The beauty of art and music is that it can last forever if people want it to. Thank you for sharing this experience. Your involvement will never be lost on us and we are truly grateful.

The White Stripes, who came to being in 1997, rocked our world for 14 glorious years. They leave as their legacy six studio albums — The White Stripes (1999), De Stijl (2000), White Blood Cells (2001), Elephant (2003), Get Behind Me Satan (2005) and Icky Thump; one live album; one E.P.; 26 singles and fifteen music videos. Oh, Jack and Meg, ye of the unrelenting black, white and red colour palette; banging thump-thump of the drums that was impossible not to rock out to; and most striking visual imagery; ye will be sadly, sadly missed.

[Archive]: Green Day’s Upcoming Album Trilogy, ¡Uno!, ¡Dos!, ¡Tre! – Album Covers Revealed

Doesn’t it seem like forever since we’ve had any new music from Green Day? Well, while it hasn’t quite been forever, it has been 3 long years since their last album, 21st Century Breakdown hit the shops. So, are you badly in need of a Billie Joe fix? I know I am! (And am also in total shock that he’s forty-years-old, since February! FORTY!!!)

Well, you’ve come to the right place, for here at Studenty we’ve got some just-in exclusive images for you, from the band’s upcoming trio of albums — ¡Uno!, which is due to be released on September 24 in the UK; ¡Dos!, which comes out on November 12 in the United Kingdom; and ¡Tre!, which will be released on January 14 2013 in the UK. While the album cover artwork for the first two releases from the upcoming trio of albums has already been released this month, the cover of part three is just in! Also — hello! –- who doesn’t need an excuse to see a pretty picture of Billie Joe, Mike and Tré happily holding up their latest pieces of musical magic?! Not me!

The album trilogy features lead vocalist and guitarist Billie Joe on the cover of part one — ¡Uno!; bassist, backing vocalist Mike Dirnt taking centre stage on the second, ¡Dos!; and, in a seriously subtle nod to his namesake, drummer Tré Cool on the cover of the final album in the set, ¡Tre!

Green Day with the complete trio of albums, ¡Uno!, ¡Dos! and ¡Tre!

The album trilogy will officially serve as their 9th album, not 9th, 10th and 11th albums, with Billie Joe’s response to the conundrum, which has surely crossed your Studenty mind being:

“One. Believe me, we asked.”

The trio of releases, which the band commenced recording on Valentine’s Day, will have their first single, Oh Love, cut from the first offering of the trilogy, ¡Uno! The single, according to Greenday.com, will “hit the airwaves” on July 16. And while the California-based band have yet to announce any Irish tour dates in 2012, they are playing some shows this year pre-album release — in Japan, France, Germany, Italy and America. Their itinerary, if you’re feeling especially flush, is as follows:

18 August 2012: Summer Sonic, Tokyo, Japan

19 August 2012: Summer Sonic, Osaka, Japan

26 August 2012: Rock en Seine, Paris, France

29 August 2012: Hockey Park, Munchengladbach, Germany

30 August 2012: Wuhlheide, Berlin, Germany

1 September 2012: Rock am See, Konstanz, Germany

2 September 2012: I-Day Festival,Bologna, Italy

10 September 2012:  Voodoo Music Experience, New Orleans, LA

Hopefully they’ll pay a visit to our fair isle during the all-but-obligatory (unless you’re Kate Bush, obvs.) tour to support the much anticipated record trilogy. Keep your ears peeled for an announcement which will most likely be made in early 2013. In the meantime, you can watch the trailers for part one and two of the album trio right here, on Studenty (below). And if you’re really hankering for a live (well, as near as you’re going to get to Green Day live this year, in Ireland anyway) Green Day fix on Irish soil, (read also: not flush enough to fly out to Japan!) you could always bag yourself a ticket to the Irish leg of their American Idiot musical, based on their mega-hit seminal album of the same name, which will be gracing us with its presence from November 5 – November 10, in Dublin’s Bord Gáis Energy Theatre.

While Green Day aren’t official cast members, they have been known to crop up from time to time, with Billie Joe attending a performance inCosta Mesa, California, as recently as 3 June. Green Day also made a surprise appearance, performing the show’s title track, along with old favourite Basket Case (from the days before American Idiot granted them a pack-fresh cachet of cool for a new generation) a few days after the musical opened in Broadway, New York, in April 2010. Billie Joe also took on the lead role, playing St. Jimmy, in the production for a brief spell in September 2010; and for a longer stint in January 2011. So, cross your fingers, toes, and anything else remotely crossable, and you just might see the mighty Green Day in the gorgeous flesh on home soil in the year 2012.

In the meantime, let me know –- are you excited about the new album trilogy? Will you be queueing up, old school style, outside a record store come September, November and January? Or will you be downloading ¡Uno!, ¡Dos! and ¡Tre! onto your MP3 player? In the case of the latter, do you even give a crap-ola about the cover art?! Do you think the trio of releases is a good idea, or a bit rip off-ey? Could it possibly come to rival the ever-brilliant American Idiot? What are your thoughts on Green Day? Tell me all in the comments, or tweet me @aprilbarry101

You can see an official YouTube preview of ¡Uno! here and ¡Dos! here.
